ANSI/ISEA Z358.1 Compliance Guide

The key requirements for emergency eye wash equipment, explained.

  1. Reach in 10 seconds

Install stations no more than 10 seconds (about 16–17 m) from the hazard, on the same level, with an unobstructed path.

  2. Activate in 1 second

Valves must go from off to on in one second or less and stay open without the use of the operator's hands.

  3. 15-minute flush

Deliver flushing fluid continuously for at least 15 minutes at a controlled, non-injurious velocity.

  4. Minimum flow rates

    Eye wash: 1.5 L/min (0.4 GPM). Eye/face wash: 11.4 L/min (3.0 GPM).

  5. Tepid fluid

Water must be tepid, generally 16–38°C (60–100°F). In the Gulf this usually means shading, insulating and regularly refreshing the water supply.

  6. Signage & lighting

Mark every station with a highly visible sign and keep the area well lit.

  7. Weekly activation

Activate plumbed units weekly to flush the line, and inspect all units annually for full compliance.
